All about Bleach

Bleach is best known as the versatile everyday chemical that’s used to remove colors and whiten using the scientific principle known as oxidization.

The most widely used bleaches are Chlorine Bleach (used in most households for laundry) and oxygen bleach.

Chlorine Bleach contains a solution of about 5% sodium hypochlorite.
Oxygen Bleach contains a wide mix of chemicals that includes such solutions as sodium hypochlorite, sodium percarbonate, sodium sulfate and tetraacethylenediamine.
In the dying process, many manufacturers will first apply a bleaching powder (calcium hypochlorite) to the material first.

Early bleaches were chemical cocktails containing local substances. One of the earliest bleach compounds consisted of Fuller’s Earch and old urine that contained high levels of ammonia. Other recipes used alternate materials, such as wood ashes.

Today, bleach is not only used for whitening, but also for its antibacterial qualities.
